Goodbye, November

Goodbye, November. You were a great month. You brought my birthday (and three parties!), visits with my sisto-face (my sister), holidays, and time with Boyfriend.

However, after the past few weeks (a wicked cold that knocked me on my rear and Boyfriend's chest scare on Monday), I've never been so ready to see December come.

Update: Boyfriend has a pinched nerve in his chest. It can be serious (surgery serious), but we'll see on Monday. So far, Boyfriend has the week off from work (hooray!) and is stuck on bed rest. But at least it isn't his heart! Such a relief!

I'm tired and Boyfriend is looking anxiously at me to watch Friends with him, so I better take off. I'll update soon! Thanks for your thoughts!

Quel Day

(Props if you mentally substituted the "day" in my title to "night" and recognized it as a reference to Breakfast at Tiffany's!)

Boyfriend started having chest pains yesterday and it wasn't until this morning (early) that I convinced him to let me take him in to the doctor. They're running test after test to see what it is...

Keep us in your prayers. It doesn't seem like his heart, so I'm leaning toward muscle/ligament issues in his chest or ribcage. The EKG was good, his cholesteral was fine, he isn't anemic... but they're making sure to check all arteries and everything just to be thorough (mostly because I pretty much demanded that they did. I don't want to leave any stone unturned).

I'm worried, but more determined at this point, probably because I have a mission: find the problem. Fix it. Keep him healthy and relaxed.

Keep us in your thoughts.

Black Friday

(My column came out today in the Las Cruces Sun-News! Click here to see it!)

Wednesday morning, I woke up with my head pounding, my nose congested and my throat scratchy. I toughed it out and went to work but spent the whole afternoon curled up in my bed surrounded by a blanket of used tissues and Gossip Girl on Netflix while Boyfriend slaved away at his double shift.

Thursday, I was hoping after a massive dose of Nyquil that I would be feeling better, but I wasn't, so I skipped Thanksgiving with my family (SAD FACE!) and spent, again, most of the day drinking Nyquil, napping, and slugging down massive amounts of Zicam and pulpy orange juice. We took an hour break t eat with Boyfriend's family, where I ate about a cup worth of food and then passed out on a couch until Boyfriend took me home, where we watched the Ravens- 49er game on TV (GO RAVENS!) and then, after another does of Nyquil, went back to bed for another 11 hours of sleep.

And success! Today I'm feeling MUCH better. :o)

I'm still a little congested and I still have a slight fever, but it's way lower than it had been Wednesday and Thursday. And I get tired easier and I still don't have an appetite, but I felt well enough for us to go to lunch with my parents and then to Target to see if there were any leftovers from the big sale earlier (there WERE! A lot!), and we scored a couple seasons on Always Sunny, a couple seasons of 30 Rock, The Blind Side, a soft blanket, Skyrim, Fantastic Mr. Fox, a soft dog toy for Catalina and a movie for Camren. Whew! :o)

Now, Boyfriend and I are setting up our Christmas tree and watching Love Actually. Great Black Friday. I deem it a success. Hope yours was as successful! :o)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope everybody is enjoying...

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...

Plenty of turkey...

Lots of pie...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Kindle

For my birthday on November 8, my parents gave me money for a Kindle...

But I can't decide ...

Or Kindle with 3G?

Kindle Touch e-reader: device held in one hand, with finger on touchscreen

Kindle Fire Pros:

Tablet
Colored
Apps
Movies
Music

Kindle Fire Cons:

Bad battery life
Expensive
No 3G
I have an iPod touch, which has all the apps/movies/music, so I don't need a tablet with those capabilities

Kindle 3G Pros:

Free 3G forever, plus WiFi
Cheaper
Longer battery life

Kindle 3G Cons:

Not a tablet
No apps/movies

I guess when I pause to write it down, it's pretty clear...

Kindle 3G it is! :o)

New Outfits

I recently wrote about buying new outfits for me, but I thought it was time to create a new outfit for my blog. Do you like it? I like it. Plus, I needed something to keep me distracted while my next sweet potato pie. :o)

Happy Wednesday!

Christmas Shopping

Oh...

You mean I should be shopping for other people?

Not... not just me?

Huh.

This weekend, Boyfriend and I completely missed the point of Christmas shopping and bought a bunch of clothes for ourselves. :o)

Like this coat! For $40!

And this shirt!

And a couple other shirts that I can't find photos of on Old Navy. Boyfriend bought jeans and a couple t-shirts. :o)

Sunday, we went to Boyfriend's mom's house for a celebration for her boyfriend Steve, who was recently promoted to warden from assistant warden at the prison nearby. I'm so happy for him... and for Boyfriend's mom, who has had to put up with years of Steve going out to the prison at all hours of the night to handle situations!

Then, we went to my parents' house. Since we always spend Thanksgiving with my grandparents in Alamogordo, my mom likes to make a Thanksgiving meal on the Sunday before the T-day on Thursday. This time, I made a sweet potato pie for my contribution because it's Boyfriend's favorite. :o)

image001.jpg

It was really good! I've never had a sweet potato pie, so I had to keep asking Boyfriend to taste the batter to make sure it was tasting like it is supposed to!

But he assured me it was great! Success!

Now, I have a couple days of work left then I'm off for four days! Hooray!

Have a good night!

Friday Favorites

SOOOO my Blogger scheduler messed up (awesome), so a little late, here is my...

FRIDAY FAVORITES! Yay!

So this week's Friday Favorites is about my favorite video games. Now, I'm not a huge gamer like Boyfriend, Thomas, and Mikey are... but I do enjoy a few games... mostly kid-type games. But whatever. Everyone loves Mario.

I LOVE racing games and I love any game in which I can play as a tall blonde princess in a pink dress (Princess Peach, duh!). Boyfriend and I are pretty much experts at this game and we've beat almost all of the competitions, including the time challenges, etc.

And of course, more Mario. This one takes me back to the Super Mario 64 (another huge favorite, but I'll spare you another photo of a small Italian plumber)... plus, I love that Boyfriend and I could play it together.

LEGO BATMAN! I love this game. I especially like being able to play as Catwoman. I'm getting pretty good at the whole whip thing.

And as long as we're talking about Catwoman...

Batman Arkham City. Even better than Arkham Assylum, in my opinion. I, again, like playing as Catwoman.

Boyfriend and I were OBSESSED with this game! We played through on easy, on the same team, and won the World Cup. I loved that we could play as the actual players (like Donovan!) and how easy it was to move.

I'm not a huge gamer, like I said, but I can play these games for hours and hours. What about you guys? Any gamers out there?

SO EXCITED

ALSO

I can't believe I've forgotten to post this until now. I waited with bated breath on Monday for this and here it is... the first trailer... and now I'm frustrated.

Because I just want to see it even more than I did before.

THE HUNGER GAMES!

Can I just say that I already LOVE Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss? I've grown up seeing my favorite book series put into movie form and not always being happy with it (Kristin Stewart? Worst. Bella. Ever. Kristin is so boring and dull and has no emotion and... ugh). And I was recently frustrated with the ending of Harry Potter... what was with ignoring how Pettigrew died? What was with not going into Dumbledore's past? and WHAT was with the whole "let's go out how we started... together" part? Weird. I liked how it was before. One final showdown. No spinning around together and being stupid.

But just from Jennifer's scene when she volunteers for her sister, I already believe her. I'm SO excited.

Have you read The Hunger Games? Did you love them as much as I do?

Holiday Season!

Like any kid growing up, I hated seeing my birthday go. But one of the best things about my birthday is that it was just a week after Halloween and just a few weeks before Thanksgiving and the holiday season! Hooray!

Secret: I went to Barnes and Noble and Walmart last weekend and even though I agreed with my friends that I just couldn't believe that they were playing Christmas music already, I was really thinking,

"YAY! CHRISTMAS MUSIC!"

I like having plenty of time to enjoy the lead up to Thanksgiving and Christmas because once they are gone, the winter season is really pretty depressing. It's just cold and wet and icy... yuck. I hate being cold more than almost anything else, and the only thing that makes it kind of acceptable is the fact that the holidays are nestled within the season.

My current obsession is my hot apple-berry cider, which I kind of made up based on a couple of other recipes. It's soooo good! Here's what you do...

Jenna's Hot Apple-Berry Cider (for Adults)

Ingredients:
Jug apple cider
Cranberry cocktail
Tequila
Cinnamon sticks/powder
Orange

I made mine in the crockpot, but it's easy to simmer all of the ingredients on the stove, in the same order as listed below.
Directions:
Pour four cupps of apple cider into the crock pot
Add 1.5 cups of cranberry cocktail
Pour in 1 cup of tequila
Mix together before squeezing the juice of one orange into the mixture. I also cut up the orange peels and let them sit in pot to keep adding flavor.
Add cinnamon and mix together.

Ta-da! Done! And it's amazing. I made it last weekend for my little get-together (I'll update soon!) and it was a hit.

I'm also excited for my favorite Christmas songs:

And my favorite Christmas memories:

1/2 CT. T.W. Enhanced Black and White Diamond Bow Ring in 10K White Gold - Gordon's Jewelers

My first Christmas present from Boyfriend... this photo is from Gordon's but I couldn't find my exact ring. I looks just like this, but just with regular diamonds and no black diamonds.

Coach Madison Ocelot Leopard Animal Print Maggie Bag Purse Brown
And my beautiful leopard print Coach bag, my present from Boyfriend last year. I'm carrying it now and I love it... it goes with everything and I love the leopard print. I actually don't like Coach bags usually because they are covered totally in the Coach Cs... which reminds me of girls wearing Hollister shirts that just say "Hollister" across the front... sometimes it feels like advertising just for the sake of advertising instead of just for the beauty of the bag.

Which is why I love my Coach. It's well made and beautiful and classy... but unless you're looking at the tiny front label or the small inside label, it's not broadcasting COACH.

I can't wait to put up our tree... Boyfriend and I bought it last year, and I'm excited to decorate it with all of the sale ornaments I got last year in January for practically nothing!

I wish I could put up new, better photos of Shadow in antlers but alas... he chewed these pretty soon after I took them off him last year. I was so sad... Boyfriend thinks this is no accident and that our dog is a genius.

Which he is :o)

Mischief

Look at this dog. You might be thinking, "Aw, what an adorable puppy!"

That's how she gets you.

Oh, sure, she's adorable. She's Remix, the roommate's puppy, and I love her very much... However, sometimes she makes me want to kill myself.

Like when she discovered that those tiny, adorable paws? Yeah, they can easily dig you out of the yard.

Awesome. AWESOME.

Even better, she discovered that the only way out (under our fence into our neighbor's yard) leads directly into the yard that contains a large, taunting, EVIL bunny that teases my dogs into a frenzy daily.

AWESOME.

Now, she can't be left alone in the yard. Which means Shadow doesn't want to be left alone in the yard. So until Boyfriend and Thomas can find enough cinderblocks to trap her in our yard, we are stuck with two wildly energetic dogs (one of whom is still only tentatively potty trained).

Awesome.

Veteran's Day

For the kids who have ever seen their parent go to basic training/training/deployment/war...

For the parents who worried about their child's safety...

For the friends who prayed for protection...

For the men and women who have, at any time, honorably served to protect us from potential/real/imminent threats...

Thank you. We have the life we have now thanks to you, to your sacrifices, to your knowledge that some things, like safety, like security, like freedom, are more important than we are. Happy Veteran's Day.

Birthdays!

So now that my two awesome birthday parties are over, I thought I would take a moment to show you my birthday in photos! Yay!

The bottom two are from the party at my mama's! So much fun. I love birthdays!

Friday Favorites!

Oh, it's Friday (FRIDAY! YAY!) which not only means it's the end of another week but it's also time for...

FRIDAY FAVORITES!

Today, I'm going to talk about my favorite flowers. I don't have a lot of favorites, but I have a few that really stand out to me that I ADORE.

Lilies. I LOVE lilies. They are so different and smell so so so good. I know most girls like lilies, so I might not be original, but so what? I love them anyway.

Lavender Wishes - Dozen Premium Lavender Roses in Las Cruces NM, Flowerama
(flowerama.com)

Roses. I really like roses... again, maybe cliche, but they smell so good and are so absolutely beautiful. I especially love yellow, orange, and lavender roses. So different and yet so classic!

Another favorite is:

Divine Orchid in Las Cruces NM, Flowerama

The orchid. I love how quickly they brighten up a room and make it instantly looked pulled together. There was a time in my life where I had four orchids in my house (until someone me killed them from overwatering...) and I loved them all.

What about you? Any flowery favorites?

Kinect

Have you guys played on the Kinect? OH MY GOD it's incredible! Last week, Boyfriend, Thomas and I played volleyball, boxing, bowling, and table tennis on it and let me tell you... I was sore the next day. My guess is it came from volleyball where you have to literally jump and swing like you're actually spiking a ball.

It helps that we are all insanely competitive so we took it really, really seriously. A lot of trash talking was involved.

Things like that are my favorite ways to exercise. I love Zumba, but I haven't found a teacher that I love yet. But I love exercise where I can't tell it's exercise. Anyone in Cruces have a great Zumba teacher? Hit a sister up.

Birthday

Dear Jenna,

Today you are 24 years old. I can't believe how old/young you are. You've gone through so much, but the best is definitely yet to come. I know you're probably looking back with longing at how much simpler things were when you were younger and you could daydream about your life without actually going through it, but it's better this way, I promise.

You've gone through first kisses, first cars, first jobs, first dates, best dates, and now you have a degree, a great job in a bad economy, a great boyfriend, a great dog, a great roommate, great friends. You might not be living in New York City like you wanted when you were 13, but this is better. Plus, I don't want to live in New York anymore: too much snow, too many people, and not enough sky.

Be happy. I am. You are.

Love,
Me

101st Post

I meant to make a comment about my 100th post... however, I wasted it by talking about enchiladas and Gears of War.

Oh, my life.

So here I am to make a note about my 101st post... I can't believe I've had this blog for almost a year! It's such a great scrapbook for my life and I hope to continue to get better at it. To the few of you who read it, thank you for still reading even though I can be random (I think we're all pretty random, don't you?) and talk endlessly about things like Diet Coke and Teen Mom.

Here's to 101 more!

  • I love enchiladas.
  • I hate eggs.
  • However, I love eggs on enchiladas. Proof that enchiladas are a magical food.

  • I need more ballet flats. I have a thousand pairs, but I always want more.
  • I'm currently watching Drumline... and I still love it as much as I did the first time that I saw it in high school.
  • Just heard the phrase "chillin with the spawn" from Boyfriend playing Gears of War with Thomas. No idea what is happening.
  • I made breakfast this morning and I feel so accomplished: eggs, bacon, biscuits. Easy, but yet I feel like I made a feast.

  • Tomorrow is my party day for my family! So excited!

  • New magazines in the mail are the best.
  • Cable is also the best.
  • MarioKart might be better than the best.
  • Okay bye!

Friday Favorites!

It's the end of the week, which means another FRIDAY FAVORITES!

Since we are about to celebrate my birthday (starting with drinks with friends!), I thought I would do a Friday Favorites about my favorite alcoholic beverages. I'm not a big drinker (plus, I'm a lightweight nowadays!), but I have a few go-to drinks that I absolutely love.

Ignore the cupcakes and focus on the beer. I love Dos Equis! I'm really starting to get into Mexican beers, which are so fresh and light and flavorful. Plus, it helps that Dos Equis is Boyfriend's favorite beer, so there's always some around!

(St. Claire winery, NM)

I searched long and hard for a good wine that I enjoy. Red wine makes me overheated (plus I prefer it cold, which is WRONG WRONG WRONG for reds! lol!). White is kind of bitter to me. I really prefer dessert wines and I don't like super dry wines... so the gewurztraminer is perfect. I can drink it cold, it's not too dry and just sweet enough, and it doesn't make me hot! Perfect wine!

(inthenameoffashionfoodandfun.blogspot.com)

In my circle of friends, I'm known best for this drink, the vodka cherry sprite. It's like a shirley temple with vodka, which only makes it better, in my opinion. Plus it's sweet and pretty and light. It's one of my absolute favorite things to drink!

And finally, how can I talk about girly drinks without talking about champagne? I looooove cold champagne (or sparking wine for those drinks that don't come directly from Champagne, France, which is apparently the only type of wine that can officially be called Champagne). It's so sweet and light and fun.

What about you? What are your favorite drinks?

Birthday!

On November 8, I'm turning (gack) 24.

TWENTY FOUR! That is officially mid-twenties. That is the oldest thing I've ever heard.

Just kidding, clearly. My mom keeps getting mad at me for saying that but I just feel so... strange. I feel like I'm a 35 year old in a 23 year old body but then, at the same time, I feel like I can't possibly be 24 already because I haven't done anything with my life. I've never been out of the country (except Juarez, which doesn't count because it's just basically the most dangerous, dirty place ever... well, the bar area I've been to!). I don't own a house. I'm not married or even engaged. I still have my car debt. I have a degree but other than that, what have I really done?

I tend to overthink things (clearly), so Boyfriend has been great about encouraging me to just chill out and enjoy a day to celebrate me. I kind of thought it would just be another day (last year, I worked all day and then ate dinner with my family and went to bed early), but then the party planning started.

Boyfriend's mom offered to throw me a party and I'm incredibly flattered. Boyfriend's family is large and very, very close (geographically and emotionally) so we are CONSTANTLY going to birthday parties for his grandpa, his grandma, his mom, his aunt Brenda, his aunt Michelle, his aunt Sylvia, his uncle Ric, his uncle Louie, his cousins Alex, Adam, Jasmine, Jeremy, Isaiah, Josiah, his little cousin Camren and soon to be 1 year old Catalina. Whew. There are a lot of birthdays and since I've been with Boyfriend for over two years, that means I've cycled through a full two times and some three times.

So with all of my birthday participation, I feel very included to have my own party for his family. His mom is a great cook and a great hostess, plus I always have a good time with his family and I'm excited. Then my mom offered to throw me a backyard BBQ birthday party the very next day. My family (mom/dad, grandma, and sister Jess with "aunts" Leigh and Arlene and "uncles" Bill and Don and their kids) usually has a restaurant dinner celebration (we usually go out to a nicer restaurant, sometimes in El Paso for a bigger selection) but I haven't had a home party from my parents since I was 18. I'm very excited for a nice, laid-back party.

On my actual birthday, Boyfriend is taking the evening off work and taking me out... I'm not sure where yet, but I'm excited to have a weekday evening with him! It'll be nice to have some time, just the two of us, to celebrate not only my birthday but our relationship. Sometimes I think it's easy to overlook that, but it's such a great part of my life and I love him so much.

He is also planning something with our friends the following Saturday after my birthday: dinner at Texas Roadhouse (a tradition in our group of friends) and then having everyone over at our house for cake and ice cream. :o)

I can't wait to celebrate with Boyfriend's family, with my family, and with my friends, all such separate groups but such blessings in my life. I think this will be a great start to my mid-twenties!

Halloween Recap!

I'm only a few days late, but I thought I would take a minute to update on Halloween night! Our plan to stay away from Drunky McDrunks went pretty well... we all got dressed up and went bowling and had a blast!

I went as Black Swan, while Boyfriend went as a Terminator, Thomas went as a pimp, and Kaitlyn went as a nerd.

Thomas blew us out of the water in bowling. He was amazing. Kaitlyn and I were just trying to break 100 lol!

I call this photo "Terminator and the Pimp: a Love Story". You can't tell, but Thomas had me add makeup so he would feel like "he was really dressing up". I added some powder and some shimmer to his cheekbones, plus a little eyeliner... then I got jealous at how pretty his eyes are with eyeliner! Boys get all the luck with lashes and eye color!

I also made Halloween funfetti cupcakes... I took this photo to show Boyfriend's ideal Halloween and mine (his refers to the huge number of Dos Equis beer!).

Shadow even got dressed up as Michael Jordan! He was quite adorable, if I do say so myself (and I definitely do!).

On Sunday, we were busy busy busy! We had breakfast at my mom's, then watched the Ravens game at a sports bar, then went to Boyfriend's uncle's house for his birthday party, then finished some laundry. Whew!

But we did take a few minutes to snuggle:

On Monday night, a family friend Shane was having a Halloween dinner and a small haunted house, so my mom, dad, Grandma and I headed over for some chili dogs and lots of candy (of course). I threw on my wings and wore a baltimore ravens jersey (Ed Reed, of course) and went as a Baltimore Raven. Cute, huh?

How were your Halloween celebrations?
