The Root of all Evil

It's true what they say, that there is no resisting and no redemption. Your regret starts the minute you give in but by that time, it's too late and you're on your way out, clutching your material loves and feeling a little dazed, as though you honestly can't remember what happened.

There is no resisting the effects of the super-store Target.

I have yet to make it through a Target trip without spending an obscene amount of money. This obscenity usually varies depending on the amount of money I have. If I've just been paid, the obscenity may be a much higher number than sometimes in college when even spending $15 was too much for me.

Today, my temptation was a beautiful purple bedspread. I've looked at this bedspread before but I wasn't really willing to pay full price for it. Today, on a lonely shelf, one sale bedspread sat alone, calling to me, 30 percent off because of a minor repackaging deal, no issue with the spread at all. Since my current sheets are purple too, I of course had to find some new sheets to go along with it.

And now, here I sit, with buyer's remorse. I love my current bedspread. It was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was just about to get my own room in the sorority house so instead of just one awkward twin extra-long bed, I'd have a king size bed all to myself. My bedspread is filled with memories of my peach colored sorority room, of dozens of my sisters piling in with me, of movie nights, of curling up in the bedspread feeling sick but feeling comforted by the thick material.

But I just couldn't help myself! Target always makes you feel like you get such great deals (which you do), so you have to snatch it up so that it doesn't get away. The next thing you know, you're walking out with a whole new bedroom set.

You win this round, Target.

Back to Life

I wish I had a better excuse for not posting all week since we got back from Arizona, but I have none. Last weekend was the Black Keys concert in Arizona and it was SO amazing!

We left early Thursday morning (well, early for us!), with an egg mcmuffin in hand. Thanks to a huuuge Diet Coke (guilty), it took us an hour longer than normal to get up to Mesa, but once there, we quickly checked into our hotel. I changed into some jeans and Boyfriend into shorts, and we headed out to the amplitheater to watch the show!

We got to the theater around 3:30, when the concert started at 6:30. I thought that was so early but since the theater is in a residential area, I guess it all had to shut down by 10:00. It was actually pretty nice to get out of there!

Anyway, thanks to us being there pretty early, we had our pick of seats, so of course Boyfriend wanted to stand right up front against the rails. You can see by our picture that we were so close to the stage, I could reach out and touch the security guards and the singers when they ran around the stage!

Cage the Elephant opened for the Black Keys and they were so great. The lead singer is especially adorable. He reminds me of my friend Mikey... always moving and dancing around. I don't like screaming music, but I really liked this band.

The openers for the openers were the Stone Foxes out of San Francisco. The lead singer could really play a harmonica! It was a great band to open up to!

And I loved their name!

The stadium filled slowly but surely. By halfway through the concert, the theater was this filled:

See all the people behind us?

It was such a great night. Since we got there so early, we got a great parking spot and were able to zip out of the lot before most people had even gotten to their cars!

And where did we go?

IN 'N OUT, of course! I think we ate it four different times in three days. It was super convenient (right down the street from our hotel), cheap, and delicious.

The next day, we swam around for a while at the hotel, then went shopping! Our little town doesn't have a very big mall, so it was a definite pleasure to have several huge malls and all the stores I wanted to shop at.

It was definitely a great trip and it got us thinking... I love our small hometown, but could a bigger city be in our future?

Time will tell! :o)

Get Away From It All

Thursday, Boyfriend and I will head off to Mesa, Arizona to watch The Black Keys tear it up at their sold out concert. I'm excited but Boyfriend is VERY excited. I love seeing him like this. Boyfriend has a great smile that really lights up his whole face and when he's excited, he's like a mini-sun all day :o)

I'm excited for Arizona for a lot of reasons other than The Black Keys, too, like this:

and definitely this!

Some pool time, some shopping, and some In N Out (which we don't have in New Mexico)... what could be better?

I'm in the middle of packing now. It's amazing how quickly I took on the same role that my mom had before trips... I'm doing laundry, making sure we have our toothbrushes and shampoo and conditioner, checking that we have all the tickets and directions. It's a lot more stressful than I gave my mom credit for! It's a lot to worry about. I miss the days of just getting in the car and letting my dad drive and completely trusting that my parents had the whole trip planned out... but at the same time, I really like taking trips with just me and Boyfriend. :o)

I will miss Shadow, though. He is such an important part of our little family and we both missed him a lot when we went to Boston in November. But he'll be staying with my parents (and their pitbull Lula Mae), where they give lots of treats and he'll have Lula to play with (and a huuuuge yard to run around in). It'll be like a little vacation... but I can't say that I didn't melt when his ears went down in sadness when I pulled out the suitcase :o(

Vacation, all I ever wanted, vacation, had to get away!

:o)

More About Me

I promise I'll get back to the cast of characters soon, but I really liked this survey so I decided to do it :o)

1. Best Meal Ever: Too many. I think I'd narrow it down to the North Side Mike's Bakery in Boston (cannolis to DIE for), pizza from New York in one of those little carts in Brooklyn, and Olives at the Bellagio with Boyfriend last year for our one year anniversary.

2. Best Sleep Ever: After I performed with the band (yes, I was in the band. We were awesome. I was a flag girl) in Albuquerque in the pouring rain (with a sabre solo). Plus I was a captain with my friend Val so we had to go down onto the field to accept our placing with the drum majors and we were soaking wet and cold and tired. I took a hot shower and slept for about 11 hours straight. So nice.

3. Best Cup of Coffee: I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I love caramel lattes from this place in my hometown called Milagro.

4. Best Romantic Moment: The thing about Boyfriend is that he's not a super romantic person. He's a great guy and he would do anything to make me happy, but he doesn't really know how to be really romantic... but when I was debating about whether to go to grad school or take a job, he told me that no matter what happens, we're a team and a family (with Shadow) and that he'd follow me wherever I want to go because he believes in me and he believes in us. So sweet :o)

5. Best Childhood Memory Moment: So many. Family reunions...  school trips... I guess I'd have to say winning state with my competitive softball softball team Heat. We practiced all the time (like, four days a week with a private batting coach and individual bags, bats, and equipment) and worked so hard... the moment that they called the game over, we were so elated that we just ran onto the field and screamed and jumped around. I remember feeling like it was all worth it.

6. Best Moment of Your Life: Hasn't happened yet, I think. I imagine marrying Boyfriend or having babies or seeing them find happiness will be the best moment of my life. But so far, I think my first kiss with Boyfriend has been the best. I had liked him for a while and we had become close friends, but I didn't know if he felt the same way. When we kissed, I knew he was the one. (God, this post is so cheesy! Sorry lol)

7. Best Moment of Revenge: Watching Boyfriend meet the guy that hurt me the worst. Boyfriend is cuter, funnier, and a better person. And when they shook hands, I saw the other guy wince from Boyfriend's strong grip. It was incredibly satisfying.

8. Best thing someone has ever done for you: I think it would be Val or Danielle. They took care of me when I was the most sad about things when I was younger. It's something I couldn't have done without.

9. Best thing you have ever done for someone else: Supported them I guess. Stayed loyal?

10. Best Life Changing Moment: Getting Shadow! :o)

True Love and True Kindness

Boyfriend and I have been dating for two years in July. (Side note: When we first started dating, I counted each month carefully and say, "We've been together eight months" or "we've been together three months". After the year and a half mark, I started estimating. I still say a year and a half sometimes)

TWO YEARS! That seems like so long, though! Two years. Growing up, I saw people date all through high school or even two years in middle school. It just seemed like a lifetime. I couldn't picture being with someone that long.

Then Boyfriend came along (cue sappy music) and now, I can't picture life without him.

I think Boyfriend and I have a great relationship. We have fun together, we truly care about each other, and I love him as much as he loves me. Believe it or not, I think that most relationships fail because someone loves the other person more than he loves her (or she loves him). It has to be perfect so that nobody has more power or pull in the relationship. I think Boyfriend and I have that.

One of the things that struck me is what my mom said when we'd been together just a few months. She told Boyfriend's mother that she can tell we are good for each other and that we are "just so nice to each other". Boyfriend's mom smiled, thought about it, and agreed.

When my mom told me that, I also paused to think about it. Boyfriend and I don't go out of our way to be overly nice to each other (in a fake way), but I guess in general, we are really kind to one another. I'd never want him to feel sad or embarrassed about himself because of my teasing or because I don't support him. He's my best friend and my love... if I'm not his biggest fan and best friend and best support system, who will be?

I think niceness is something lacking, sometimes. Sure, I joke with my friends when we call each other silly names, but none of my friends ever make me feel like I can't do something or like I'm not good enough to go after something I want. They are all really good people and understand the importance of ethics in any part of your life- friends, work, school, family, and love.

Boyfriend and I are nice to each other because we are happy together. This makes me think of Sex and the City, when Samantha asks the other girls if they are really happy in their relationships. I think my relationship stance is most like Charlotte's response: [I'm happy] every day. Not all day every day, but every day.

That is definitely how I feel. Every day, I feel thankful that I have someone in my life like Boyfriend, someone who makes me laugh and lets me make the big decisions (I have a control issue... I really, really like to be involved in decision-making and choices) and, if I let him, would dedicate all of his time to running my errands and dedicate all of his money to me without hestitation. This freedom with his time and love really makes me think about him more.. about what is best for him and what would make him happy.

I guess that's what it all boils down to: a relationship works best when each person just wants to see the other person happy. And, cheesily enough, Boyfriend is what makes me happy.

:o)
